London Personal Favourites Restaurant

Hutong

Situated on the 33rd floor of the Shard, Hutong is an award-winning London restaurant serving northern Chinese cuisine. From the moment you walk in, the view is breathtaking and sets the mood for the amazing Hutong experience. It is especially impressive if you can get a dinner booking at sunset on a clear evening as the golden sunlight and the view of the sunset over London is beautiful.

The decor is very cool. I particularly liked the wall of red lanterns and the tree in the middle of the restaurant with red ribbons. There was also a Chinese tea wall with tins of tea and a line of candles. The doors and doorways are very grand with the bar entrance being a circular wooden archway and thick, elegant double doors to the entrance of the private dining rooms.

The staff were super friendly. The whole evening was so effortless on our part as we got great dish recommendations and we had great advice from the sommelier on wine – we went for a Malbec of course! The food came out in perfect time and I also really appreciated the staff noticing us trying to get good photos and offering to help.

Hutong Food

Food-wise, we had the dim sum platter to start. The platter included a cod and seaweed dumpling, an XO sauce crystal prawn dumpling, a mushroom and spinach dumpling and lastly, my favourite as it was pink in colour and so extra – a rosé champagne shrimp dumpling. My main food highlight was the crispy soft-shell crab with Sichuan dried chilli served in this beautiful black basket. We also had the calamari flowers for a started which were delicious; you could really taste how fresh the calamari was. For mains, we enjoyed the spicy minced beef with string beans, crispy de-boned lamb ribs with fried noodles and seasonal vegetables. For dessert, we had the mini black sesame glutinous dumplings. Rich and tasty but the perfect size for a sweet to end a great meal. I very much enjoyed all the food; everything was super tasty and perfectly balanced flavours. I liked that we were nicely full from the food but not feeling painfully full. You can certainly see the quality in the cooking and ingredients.

Overall, I could not recommend Hutong more. Fantastic food, excellent service and an exceptional experience with the incredible views. I can’t wait to go again soon and try more of the menu.
