Maltby Street Market – London

Maltby Street Market is my favourite food market in London. Maltby Street is an outdoor street food weekend market in central London. It is located just a short walk away from London Bridge station. It is an incredibly popular weekend destination. This is as a result of the fantastic quality and variety of street food on offer. Borough Market has become a lot more touristy over the years, Maltby Street has remained very much a locals market. It is, therefore, a must-visit for any true Londoner or ultimate foodie like myself.

Maltby Street is astonishingly picturesque with the flags hung down the walkway. It brings to life the multicultural nature of the market and gives the market an authentic but vibrant feel to it. The Maltby Street Ropewalk name is a reference to the ropewalk owned by notable Bermondsey eccentric Robert Rich in the eighteenth century. The area was transformed when the London to Greenwich railway was added in 1836.

One of the things I do love about Bermondsey/London Bridge is the railway arches and the various craft breweries or distilleries in them. Within Maltby Street, there is Little Bird Gin which serves the best Bloody Mary cocktails. Just outside the market is Jensen’s Bermondsey Gin distillery, which I also love for takeaway bottles of gin or refreshing cocktails on market days.

Bermondsey Beer Mile

There is the famous Bermondsey Beer mile which includes over 17 micro craft breweries. All are located in the archways between Maltby Street Market and Bermondsey Trading Estate. It is actually almost 2 miles long! You can either have breakfast and start the Bermondsey Beer Mile at Maltby Street or end it at Maltby Street. I prefer to end it at Maltby Street

I have many favourite stands within the market, see below my various blogs on the ones I recommend the most.

La Pepia is one of my favourite stands at Maltby Street Market. La Pepia serve rainbow coloured Venezuelan arepas. First started in 2016 on Brick Lane in East London. Since then, they have become the first Venezuelan eatery to ever trade in the world-famous Borough Market in 2019. From South America, an arepa is a […]
